Bizarre, novelty and extravagance in the European silks of the eighteenth
Via Cernobbio, 19, Como
FRIDAY 14 DECEMBER 2018 – SUNDAY 31 MARCH 2019
The Antonio Ratti Foundation opens on 14 December 2018 at 6 pm in the exhibition rooms of Villa Sucota, Bizarre, novelties and extravagances in the European silks of the 18th by Maddalena Terragni in collaboration with Gregorio Magnani.
The exhibition, which runs from 15 December 2018 to 31 March 2019, presents an unprecedented dialogue between a selection of “bizarres” fabrics, coming from the FAR and TGL collections, and the work of the artist Stefano Arienti.
Bizarre, novelty and extravagance in the European silks of the 18th shows, in a contemporary and transversal perspective, a phenomenon in the history of the Western fabric. At the turn of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, European weavers invent unusual decorative motifs by mixing them freely and drawing on all the cultural references that come from the East, without worrying about producing representations faithful to reality. It is this approach in redesigning the forms the common sign between these productions and the contemporary.
Following their sensitivity and interpreting the forms, for the first time the textile artisans can draw hands to the repertoire of the designs and create for their polychromatic silks abstract designs that wind their sinuous mix with geometric motifs, great fantastic inflorescences that merge between depictions of baroque architecture and oriental buildings. The realization of such demanding drawings is made possible by the very high technical competence of the time, able to translate the novelties, the extravagance and the refinement of the decorations, sometimes difficult to read.
This free approach, common to eighteenth-century and contemporary productions, is reiterated and emphasized by Stefano Arienti’s site-specific intervention. It is not the first time that Arienti’s work develops through the comparison with a historical collection – for example, we remember the recent Meridiane windows exhibitions. Intersections with the collection of Villa Croce, Genoa (2017) or Quadri from an exhibition, Palazzo Te, Mantova (2016) – but the FAR case is unique for the pressing dialogue that is established with the fabrics.
