From the Festival Nature Urbane in Varese to the Marathon Trail Lago di Como on the Como Lake. Our guide to 5 unmissable events in Lombardy from September 17th to September 23rd, 2018.
1. NATURE URBANE. FESTIVAL DEL PAESAGGIO
Varese | 20th - 30th September 2018
For the second edition of “Nature Urbane. Festival del Paesaggio”, twenty-three historical residences will open to the public. The guided itineraries will be sixteen, including a night climb along Via Sacra for observing the moon. For children and teenagers, a series of landscape educational activities with agronomists and forest rangers. This year, Varese, the garden-city of Lombardy, will amaze visitors with a programme of more than 400 happenings. Concerts, shows, animations, labs, meetings and readings. The young actors of Teatro Piccolo in Milan together with Monica Guerritore and David Riondino will lend their voices for the serial reading of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. With them, the world of pirates will come to life in the public parks, on the lake and in Campo dei Fiori.
Lecco | 14th September - 26th October 26th 2018
Book launches, documentary screenings, photo exhibitions and much more. This year, “Immagimondo” – one of Italy’s most important and “historical” festivals focused on travelling – will open a dialogue with countries and people from all over the world. Presenting their travel adventures, a number of audacious women, including Stefania Valsecchi, who travelled solo from Catania to North Cape by bike, and Ulrike Raiser, who explored Alaska with her camera and a 12-kg backpack. A series of meetings will also focus on meditative itineraries: from the Columban Way to Santa Barbara, a journey along old roads, mule tracks and abandoned train paths in Sardinia. For those who dream to embark in the journey of their lives or simply love to discover, the detailed programme is available online.
3. MARATHON TRAIL LAGO DI COMO
Lake of Como | 22nd - 23rd September 2018
Also this year, extreme running lovers will challenge themselves with the “Marathon Trail Lago di Como”, a mountain running race characterized by scenic views, unforgettable level drops and an altitude ranging from 200 to 2000 meters. Three distances will feature multiple difficulties. Those signing up for the Long Distance will struggle for 119 kilometres. Time limit: 29 hours and half. The kilometres for the Mid Distance will be 70 to be completed in 14 hours, while the Short Distance will require runners to cover “only” 31 kilometres in 8 hours. Starting and finishing point? Menaggio, the gathering point for encouraging the Ultra Trail’s heroes.
4. FESTIVAL AMILCARE PONCHIELLI

5. FESTA DELLA ZUCCA
Casalmaggiore | 20th - 23rd September, 2018
Do you know “blisgòn casalaschi”? They are Casalmaggiore’s specialty: squared tortello filled with pumpkin, mustard, amaretto and nutmeg. The “Festa della Zucca” in Casalmaggiore, one of the most anticipated events in Oglio Po, is the right chance to try them! Not only blisgòn, though: in Piazza Garibaldi, visitors can taste the orange vegetable in a multitude of forms, both sweet and salty. Local food, but also ethnic cuisine. And the programme does not end with this savoury melting pot: on Saturday and Sunday, the second edition of Inventio, the “reasoning” pumpkin celebration devoted to the 4.0 industry. With demonstrations, robotic workshops, electric circuits, drones, 3D printing and coding.
